Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each fall.
The pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for all persons aged 65 years or older. The vaccine is typically given only once. This protects most people for a lifetime, although some might need to get a booster shot after 5 years. The pneumococcal shot protects individuals from getting serious infections in the blood or brain that can cause dangerous health problems.
The Martin County Health Department schedules flu vaccine clinics in the Fall before the start of flu season. Several community agencies also provide flu shots.
