Knowledge is Power: Empowering Teens

Picture of Hearts and StarsBeing a teenager in today’s world can be challenging and sometimes confusing. Some teens need help balancing the pressures associated with school, home and growing up.

Empowering Teens is an outreach program designed to assist in the prevention of teen pregnancy. The goal is achieved through educational outreach activities that provide teens with health information as well as tools to help teens understand the importance of setting goals.

The Issue of Teen Pregnancy
Teen pregnancy is one of the most challenging issues a young person can face. An unplanned pregnancy can create a series of emotional issues as well as a financial crisis for all the families involved. Helping teens set goals and make informed choices can help prevent teens from becoming parents.

Reaching At Risk Teens
With support from community partners and nurses from the Health Department’s School Health team, the Empowering Teen’s Coordinator is working to reach teens most at risk and identify barriers that might prevent teens from accessing health information and services.

Teen Pregnancy in Martin County
Year after year, the number of Martin County teenagers who are becoming pregnant is continuing to rise. The percentage of repeat teenage mother is also increasing.

The goal of the Empowering Teens program is to deliver comprehensive outreach activities that will connect with underserved teens to help reduce the number of teenage pregnancies.
